Typical Course Sequences

It is assumed that students will take the normal sequence for their department in the first two years and will not commit to entering this certificate program until the end of their sophomore year. The following are typical course sequences which students might follow. Humanities electives and seminar courses are taken in addition to the courses listed here.

B.S. in Electrical Engineering:

Semester 1:  Phys 174, Math 220, Chem 960, Eng 011

Semester 2:  Phys 175, Math 230, Chem 970, Eng 012

Semester 3:  Math 240, EE 031, EE 132

Semester 4:  Math 250, EE 041, EE 0501, EE 142, EE 1257

Semester 5:  Photonics 0, EE 1552, EE 1247,  EE 1201, EE 1259, Phys 1361

Semester 6:  Photonics 0, EE 1563, EE 1212, EE 1232, EE 1266, Eng 0020

Semester 7:  Photonics 1, Chem 1250 (or Telecomm 2222 in previous summer)

Semester 8:  Photonics 2,  Photonics lab, Chem 1410

Photonics 1 and 2 will be counted as EE electives for Electrical Engineering majors. Chemistry 1250, 1410,  Physics 1361, and Telecomm 2222 count as Technical electives for Electrical Engineering majors.

B.S in Physics:

Semester 1:  Phys 174, Math 220, Chem 110

Semester 2:  Phys 175, Math 230, Chem 120

Semester 3:  Phys 219, Math 240,  Phys 480

Semester 4: Math 250, Phys 481, Phys 525

Semester 5: Photonics 0, Phys 1351, Phys 1361, EE 1247

Semester 6: Photonics 0, EE 1232,  Phys 1331, Chem 1410

Semester 7: Photonics 1,  Phys 1321, Chem 1250 (or Telecomm 2222 in previous summer)

Semester 8: Photonics 2, Photonics lab, Phys 1426,  Phys 1341

B.S. in Chemistry: (Photonics Option with Photonics Certificate and ACS certification)

Semester 1:  Phys 174, Math 220, Chem 110

Semester 2:  Phys 175, Math 230, Chem 120

Semester 3:  Phys 219, Math 240, Chem 310/330

Semester 4:  Math 250, Chem 250/260,  Chem 320/340

Semester 5:  Photonics 0, Phys 1361, EE 1247, Chem 1250/1255

Semester 6:  Photonics 0,  EE 1232, Chem 1410

Semester 7:  Photonics 1, Chem 1420, Chem 1430, Phys 1351 (or Telecomm 2222 in previous summer)

Semester 8:  Photonics 2, Photonics lab, Chem 1130

In this case, the student is assumed to start taking physics courses in the freshman year. Chemistry majors can also take the Photonics Option alone, without getting the Certificate. The following is a typical course sequence for the non-certificate Photonics Option:

B.S. in Chemistry: (Photonics Option with ACS certification, no Photonics Certificate)

Semester 1:  Math 220, Chem 110

Semester 2:  Math 230, Chem 120

Semester 3:  Phys 174, Math 240, Chem 310/330

Semester 4:  Phys 175,  Phys 219,  Chem 320/340

Semester 5:  Phys 1361, Chem 250/260, Chem 1410

Semester 6:  EE 1232, Chem 1250/1255, Chem 1430 Chem 1700

Semester 7:  Photonics 1, Chem 1130, Chem 1420,

Semester 8:  Photonics 2, Chem 1140, Chem 1440
