How to Register/
Post-Bachelor's Registration

How to register as an Undergraduate at Pitt:

Registration for the Photonics Certificate program is done through the College of Arts and Sciences at Thackery Hall. The Photonics Certificate is entered as "program code 170120" and "degree goal 74".

In addition, you should contact the program director, David Snoke, directly, at "snoke@pitt.edu" in order to be placed on the mailing list.

Students in the Engineering School register for their major degree in Engineering, but must still register in Arts and Sciences for the Photonics Certificate.

When you are ready to graduate, if you have completed the Certificate requirements, you must fill out an additional form to receive the Certificate in addition to your Bachelor's degree. You should receive the form in your normal graduate package.

Post-Bachelor's Registration:

It is possible to receive the Photonics Certificate after you have graduated. To do this, you must register as a post-Bachelor's student in the Arts and Sciences, and register for the Photonics Certificate as above. After completing the courses, you apply for graduation again but only for the Certificate.

If you have received a Bachelor's from another school besides Pitt, credit for equivalent courses at another institution can be given toward the requirements of this certificate.

For example, if you already have a regular science Bachelor's degree which includes basic math, chemistry, and physics, a one-year program might look as follows:

There is currently no Master's degree program in photonics. However, photonics research can be pursued through the graduate programs of the individual departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Electrical Engineering.
