Graduate Academics
The University of Pittsburgh's Department of Physics and Astronomy is internationally
recognized as a leader at the frontier of science. With over 500 PhD alumni, it has
launched many distinguished careers. The department is maintaining its tradition of
excellence and innovation as our faculty and students explore the fundamental laws of
nature, from the tiniest sub-nuclear particles to the unimaginably large phenomena in
the universe.
Students have a wide range of programs from which to choose a thesis
topic. Our faculty members have active
research programs in atomic physics, astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology using
both ground- and space-based telescopes, particle astrophysics, condensed-matter and
solid-state physics, particle physics, chemical physics and biological physics. Their
research is frequently carried out in collaboration with scientists from many other fields,
including biology, mathematics, medicine, chemistry, engineering, and computer science. In
addition to research opportunities in the department, interdisciplinary research
opportunities, national and international collaborations, and first-hand contact with
cutting-edge science are also available to our graduate students to prepare them for
careers as researchers at major academic and industrial laboratories, as educators at
universities and colleges, and as independent scientific entrepreneurs.
