Application Instructions

To be considered for admission to graduate study in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh, a student must have earned a baccalaureate degree in physics, astronomy, or some related field; submit a complete on-line application and supporting materials; and have a distinguished undergraduate record. Unless otherwise indicated, a completed application also serves as an application for financial aid.

Domestic Applicants

A completed application to our department at the University of Pittsburgh includes:
  1. A completed copy of the application form. Log on to Applyyourself.com, create an account, complete the application on-line. You do not need to do it all at once; the server saves your work! Select Physics and Astronomy as the department. You do NOT have to specify a specialty, but you may wish to do so.
  2. Paper applications are no longer accepted.
  3. A statement of purpose (not longer than two pages) that addresses your specific interests and/or expertise in physics and astronomy, and describes as specifically as possible the area of research you wish to pursue.
  4. Transcripts for all college-level institutions attended.
  5. Three letters of reference.
  6. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores including the physics subject examination.
  7. The Application Fee is waived for U.S. citizens and permanant residents.

All application materials should be received by January 31 to guarantee full consideration for admission to the fall term. Late applications will be considered as space permits. For more information please contact:

International Applicants

General Information for International Students

A completed application to our department at the University of Pittsburgh includes:

  3. Supplemental International Graduate Student Application Packet to be completed and mailed to the address below. If the applicant is requesting support from the department, the applicant can ignore the financial section of the supplemental form.
  4. A statement of purpose (not longer than two pages) that addresses your specific interests and/or expertise in physics and astronomy, and describes as specifically as possible the area of research you wish to pursue.
  5. Transcripts for all college-level institutions attended.
  6. Three letters of reference can be completed on line or sent regular mail.
  7. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores including the physics subject examination.
  8. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores for non-native speakers of English. The iBT (Internet-Based Test; see the FAQ for details) is also acceptable. (Institution code: 2927; code 76 or 61 for Physics and Astronomy)
  9. The Application Fee of US$50. (Please refer to Item 7 in the instructions for domestic applicants.)
