In 1983 Daehnick published a major review article [DAE83] on empirically extracted effective interactions. Though based on the same general methodology as the earlier work of Schiffer & True [SCH76], it achieved significant progress by including in the analysis experimental data obtained from all sources since 1976. Daehnick's review also reported some results on off-diagonal matrix elements, whereas Schiffer and True had limited their work to diagonal elements. Daehnick was particularly careful to assess the errors due to missing spectroscopic strength, and ingeniously compared results on particle-particle and particle-hole interactions to estimate bounds on the errors.
