Today's cutting edge experiments require a higher degree of precision than ever before. At Pitt, our experimental physicists enjoy the luxury of having a machine shop capable of building apparatus that can not be bought off the shelf. This enables them to conduct research nearly without bounds. The machine shop has three computer controlled mills and one computer controlled lathe, as well as a manual mill and three manual lathes. The machine shop also has two clean rooms for delicate projects and an overhead crane to load and unload large equpment. Graduate students are able to learn to do their own machine work, allowing them to fully benefit from the machine shop. |
