Faculty Openings in Physics & Astronomy
Five Faculty Openings in Physics & Astronomy
Named Professorship
Mellon Search Chair:The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh (http://www.phyast.pitt.edu) invites applications from outstanding individuals for the chaired Mellon Professorship of Physics and Astronomy. This appointment will be one of up to five new appointments described in the accompanying ads. This tenured appointment, which is subject to budgetary approval, would begin with the Fall term 2008, or thereafter.
Applicants should have achieved a high level of prominence in their respective fields, be internationally recognized, and be at the tenured level or the equivalent. Further, applicants should also have demonstrated ability to build and successfully fund a creative, independent, and broad-based research program and to provide cohesion with existing efforts. The successful candidate will likely have an established record as an educator having demonstrated teaching effectiveness at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Outstanding candidates working in all active areas of physics and astronomy are encouraged to apply. Some preference will be given to the interdisciplinary fields of cosmology and/or astroparticle physics, quantum information, and biophysics research. These are areas in which the department is currently building or wishes to build strength.
To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by December 31, 2007. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applicants should email PDF documents (preferably a single document) containing curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests and a list of references to . The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and members of minority groups under-represented in academia are especially encouraged to apply.
Condensed Matter Physics and NanoScience
Condensed Matter/Nanoscience Search Chair:The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh is recruiting up to three condensed matter researchers and/or nanoscience experimenters to join our tenured or tenure-stream faculty, with the level of the individual appointments determined by the qualifications of the applicants. One of these appointments may be at the level of tenured Associate Professor or be the Named Professorship described in the accompanying ad. While the appointments will be in the Department of Physics and Astronomy (http://www.phyast.pitt.edu), at least two of the appointments will be in the area of nanoscience and will be explicitly associated with the University-wide initiative centered at the Peterson Institute of NanoScience and Engineering (http://www.nano.pitt.edu). These appointments, which are subject to budgetary approval, would begin in the Fall Term 2008, or thereafter.
All applicants should have demonstrated the ability to attract adequate external funding for a creative, independent and broad-based research program, to provide cohesion with existing efforts and potentially initiate new directions, and to teach effectively at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Successful candidates will be able to reach out to other members of our Department, interact with interdisciplinary researchers associated with the Petersen Institute of NanoScience and Engineering, and/or connect with the broader scientific community in Pittsburgh.
Physicists active in areas related to nanoscience and the many broad areas of condensed matter physics, including biological physics, are encouraged to apply. While the focus is on experimental researchers with demonstrated abilities, we will also consider applications from theorists with an exceptional record or promise.
To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by October 15, 2007. However, applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. Applicants should email PDF documents (preferably a single document) containing a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests, and brief teaching statement to . In addition, applicants should arrange to have at least three letters of reference sent to: CM-Nano Search Committee, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260. The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and members of minority groups under-represented in academia are especially encouraged to apply.
Cosmology
Cosmology Search Chair:The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh (http://www.phyast.pitt.edu) invites applications for up to two new faculty members in astrophysics/cosmology to join our tenured or tenure-stream faculty, with the level of individual appointments determined by the qualifications of the applicants. One of these appointments may be at the level of tenured Associate Professor or be the Named Professorship described in the accompanying ad. These appointments, which are subject to budgetary approval, would begin in the Fall Term 2008, or thereafter.
We are particularly interested in candidates with strong physics backgrounds who will complement current research strengths in theoretical cosmology and extragalactic astronomy, and will consider candidates with any area of specialization within cosmology, including those areas of particle astrophysics which address the fundamental nature of dark matter and/or dark energy. The Department is a significant user of national and international research facilities, is a member of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) collaboration and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) collaboration, and is a participant in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) project. In addition to research accomplishments and future promise, candidates must show potential for a high degree of teaching effectiveness at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
