Faculty Openings in Physics & Astronomy -- 2009

Named Professorship

Mellon Search Chair:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh (http://www.phyast.pitt.edu) invites applications from outstanding individuals for the chaired Mellon Professorship of Physics and Astronomy. This tenured appointment, which is subject to budgetary approval, would begin with the Fall term 2010, or thereafter.

Applicants should have achieved a high level of prominence in their respective fields, be internationally recognized, and be at the tenured level or the equivalent. Further, applicants should also have demonstrated ability to build and successfully fund a creative, independent, and broad-based research program and to provide cohesion with existing efforts. The successful candidate will likely have an established record as an educator having demonstrated teaching effectiveness at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Outstanding candidates working in all active areas of physics and astronomy are encouraged to apply. Some preference will be given to the interdisciplinary fields of cosmology and/or astroparticle physics, quantum information, and biophysics research. These are areas in which the Department is currently building or wishes to build strength.

To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by December 31, 2009. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applicants should email PDF documents (preferably a single document) containing curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests and a list of references to . The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and members of minority groups under-represented in academia are especially encouraged to apply.

Astrophysics/Cosmology

Astrophysics/Cosmology Search Chair:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh (http://www.phyast.pitt.edu) invites applications for a new faculty member in astrophysics/cosmology to join our tenure-stream faculty. The appointment will be at the assistant professor level. The appointment, which is subject to budgetary approval, would begin in the Fall Term 2010, or thereafter.

We are particularly interested in candidates with strong physics backgrounds who will complement current research strengths in astrophysics, cosmology and extragalactic astronomy. We will consider candidates with any area of specialization within astrophysics/cosmology, including those areas of particle astrophysics which address the fundamental nature of dark matter and/or dark energy. The Department is a significant user of national and international research facilities, is a member of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) collaboration and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) collaboration. Some faculty participate in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) project, Pan-STARRs, and SDSS-III. In addition to research accomplishments and future promise, candidates must show potential for a high degree of teaching effectiveness at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by November 16, 2009. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applicants should email PDF documents (preferably a single document) containing a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests, and brief teaching statement to . In addition, applicants should arrange to have at least three letters of reference sent to: Cosmo Search Committee, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260. The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and members of minority groups under-represented in academia are especially encouraged to apply.

Condensed Matter Theory

Condensed Matter Theory Search Chair:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh (http://www.phyast.pitt.edu) invites applications for a new faculty member in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics. This appointment, which is subject to budgetary approval, will be in the tenure stream at the Assistant Professor level and will begin with the Fall Term 2010, or thereafter. This is the first of two planned additions to the department in condensed matter theory.

While applications over a wide range of specialties are encouraged, the successful candidate will likely complement existing theoretical and experimental programs in our department.

All candidates should have the potential to teach effectively at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and to attract external funding for a creative, independent and broad-based research program.

To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by October 15, 2009. However, applications will be accepted for the duration of the search. Applicants should email PDF documents (preferably a single document) containing a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests, and brief teaching statement to . In addition, applicants should arrange to have at least three letters of reference sent to: CM-Theory Search Committee, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260. The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and members of minority groups under-represented in academia are especially encouraged to apply.

Condensed Matter Physics and NanoScience

Condensed Matter/NanoScience Chair:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a new faculty member in condensed matter physics and/or nanoscience to join our tenured or tenure-stream faculty. In addition to an appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy (http://www.phyast.pitt.edu), any appointment in nanoscience will also be explicitly associated with the University-wide initiative centered at the Peterson Institute of NanoScience and Engineering (http://www.nano.pitt.edu). This appointment, which is subject to budgetary approval, would begin in the fall term 2010, or thereafter.

All applicants should have demonstrated the ability to attract adequate external funding for a creative, independent and broad-based research program, to provide cohesion with existing efforts and potentially initiate new directions, and to teach effectively at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Successful candidates will be able to reach out to other members of our Department, connect with the broader scientific community in Pittsburgh, and/or interact with interdisciplinary researchers associated with the Petersen Institute of NanoScience and Engineering.

We seek physicists active in areas related to condensed matter physics and/or nanoscience. The focus is on experimental researchers with demonstrated abilities.

To ensure full consideration, complete applications should be received by October 15, 2009. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applicants should email PDF documents (preferably a single document) containing a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests, and brief teaching statement to .
