Schedule of May 2003 Cape Town PhysMoVan May 1: leave Stl. 6:00 am. some last minute confusion because Delta (contrary to what they told us, but did not put into their records on the phone, could not take the large C2 mirrors box. before the 9/11 special precautions they could have put it on a later plane with larger cargo doors, but couldn't do that in the present circumstances... so, we abandoned it on the floor, and made the flight with a few minutes to spare. (also had to abandon the small adjustable wrench i had brought, and in the confusion left in my backpack, and unfortunately my last minute mail will have to be sent from S. Africa, since it ended up in checked luggage, as we frantically repacked and divided the few delicate items we had stored in the BIG C2 mirror box into some other less solid packing. but, all's well that ends well, and ... May 2: arrived on time, 7:20 am local time in Cape Town (1:20 am EST). taxi to the lab (rather full, but we managed), beat ginny stone to work by a few minutes. unloaded, unpacked most urgent things, etc, then jat picked up by delia marshall (uwc) for morning meeting with melvin caroline (head, metropole east emdc) and ramesh maharaj (physical sciences advisor, metropole east). and peter oxenham (COSAT, and one of the two-member evaluation team. note that cosat is one of two *** Project schools (which are intended to increase learners in math and science). he teaches physics at COSAT and is interested to see how best to make PhysMoVan effective and relevant to S. African science learners. we look forward to the results of the evaluation, which we think will make a stronger final program. meanwhile matt fagerburg and nichelle madison, the US team members (both from University of Pittsburgh) unpacked and began thinking about improved ways to presenting the material, etc. also had some lunch and, after lunch, some much deserved rest. we expect to meet with moira paulsen this evening to prepare for tomorrow... May 3: 7:30 Moira Paulsen picked us up at COSAT, with her husband Ben. She is a grad. student working with Delia Marshall at UWC in physics education. He is a postdoc in chemistry. 8:00 begin COSAT setup. 8:30 - 10:30 session A. Grade 10A does exploratorium (jat, Moira, and 2 grade 12 learners). Grade 11A does light scattering and electricity Grade 11 does electricity (Matt) and collisions (Nichelle, aka Nikki) (12 in each group) 11:00am - 1:00pm session B. Grade 10B does exploratorium (jat, Moira, and 2 grade 12 learners) Grade 11B does electricity (Matt) and light scattering (Nichelle) (Matt as i understand it did each session one group, 2 hrs. not sure about Nichelle). In two hours, the students became interested in the E865 stuff. (some students); others just became a little bored. Also, jt pretty tired by the end of the second one. Moira just getting started, and the two grade 12 learners, not being really experts, were less effective than a trained team member. suggest that in future we really do need our hand-waving figure of 1 team-trained member per each 6 exploratorium participants. Still, students were enthusiastic and interested. Peter Oxenham made a few suggestions about the electricity lab: start with E vs R, one resistor, by adding batteries in series. Also, the rather complicated graphs suggested may not work except with high grade 12 students. In the afternoon, Matt and Nichelle went to the Waterfront to browse and get their bearings (had planned Kirstenbosch, but it was raining, so they changed their plans). jt home, well-earned 2 hr nap, then started in on various projects. solved the problem of how to print files (by chance, stumbled on a person in helping the accelerator guys with some computer problems), so we can prepare our materials for the trip. finished digging out the stuff which had bee left but not used in the PhysMoVan room. detailed list of things to inventory, sort, pack, get working, before we leave tomorrow. back to find Matt and Nichelle returned, talked about plans, etc. for the next day while eating supper. May 4: leave around 6:30 pm for Worcester. (Moira took us, and worked with us all day Monday and Tuesday morning.) arr. approx. 8pm, go to Lange Linge guest house, opposite their office May 5: meet Celeste Issel (cell 082-370-9472) at the Worcester EMDC. 9-4:30 pm: workshop in Worcester with ~ 20 teachers. 9-1pm: intro, each teacher did each experiment. 1-1:30 pm: lunch 1:30-2:00 pm. exploratorium setup 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm. exploratorium. (many teachers leaving around 3:30-4:00 pm. May 6: (times approximate) 9-10:30 Langeberg Senior Secondary School Mr. Edgar Johannes, Miss Jacqueline de Pieey (also students from Masakheke Secondary, with Mr. Louis Haussamer) met two groups of ~ 30 each (exploratorium) (Mr. Haussamer worked in detail with his students and electricity) 11:00-12:00 Ashton Mr. V. Paiamole ~ 80 students, in two exploratorium groups. 1:00-3:30 Worcester. ~ 80 students, rotating between electricity and exploratorium Bella Vista Secondary -- Miss Moira Hofmeester Worcester Secondary -- Miss Kividore Fillis Incinga Zethu -- Mr. Tshibani Breerivier Secondary -- Mr. Titus return to Hermanus with Sam Ramaila meet Dr. Peter Sutcliffe, Director of the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory. Ockhuis) two exploratorium groups, each 25-30 1:30-4:30 exploratorium and 4 experiments (rotating, each student 2 exps) Bredasdorp HS --- Mr. Van Aardt ~ 10 students Hermanus Sec. School -- [ ??] ~ 15 students Caledon Sec. School -- [??] ~ 12 students Qhayiya HS -- Mrs. Mosiua ~ 50 students May 8: catch our breath, setup exploratorium in Hermanus. May 9: finish setup exploratorium in Hermanus (acquire free bicycle wheel, establish that the U.S. canonical "trouble light" is either not known or "very old, from biblical times", buy some fabric to give our exploratorium some class, establish that small toy animals and dolls are hard to find in Hermanus (for the pendulum experiment),... give exploratorium demo to ~ 15 staff at Hermanus Magnetic Observatory, PhysMoVan team is very grateful to Hermanus group for their hospitality. 3 HMO staff return the PhysMoVan group "home" to iThemba labs. groups continues teacher notebook preparation for next week (teacher workshops). May 10: (Saturday) 8:30 jat COSAT, debriefing, evaluation of May 3 visit. suggestions for improvement (jat visit to Khayelitsha Craft Market, where she splurged and bought many souvenirs, almost all made by township people. This market is sponsored by the [Episcopal?] community church. Matt and Nichelle visit Robben Island, home about 7pm.) (Tour Operator Jean 072 358 8092 will drop at Waterfront, pick up at Kirstenbosch, return to iThemba) 5:00 pm. jat phone conversation with Zwannda, CEO of FEDSET (Fed. for education, science, engineering and technology). approx. 9:15 pm, Zwannda arrives, for discussion of scientific literacy problems in S. Africa, and possible funding avenues to address the problems. A concrete suggestion was that the group of 15 UCT SEED tutors (mostly undergrad. engineering students) come to COSAT on May 17, to train with the equipment which they were given (through Nceba Mhalo) last August. Zwannda agreed to pay the transport for the SEED tutors. He said the SEED tutors have specially helped Kwamfundo, and the 10 A's in physics last year are an indication of their strong impact. May 11: (Sunday, Mother's Day.. hello to all our mothers...we're working hard, eating our spinach, drinking our milk, and thanking you for all your care in raising us). afternoon: get ready for next week, West Coast, Winelands coming up... The contact number of the school is 021 862 220. 1:15-2:30 ~ 80 students (mixed Gr. 10, 11, 12?). exploratorium, split between two rooms. 2:30-3:30 pm: tweak exploratorium for teacher workshop to follow. jat and Delia return to Cape Town via iThemba labs, moving C2 mirrors and some small equipment to UWC, where jat will give seminar on Friday, and the more sophisticated equipment will remain for use with exploratoriums and undergraduate education. rest of the team does the exploratorium for teachers; Trevor Daniels' kit is returned to him (note some batteries low, and he may need to replace them). Trevor will send summary of work in West Coast/Winelands to PhysMoVan evaluator Peter Oxenham. current tentative consensus on suggestions for most effective work going forward is to revisit previously visited schools occasionally (for the "visitor excitement" effect, but for the bulk of the work going forward in development to be through COSAT (development of materials to use in classes for assessment in conjunction with the PhysMoVan hands on and exploratorium activities), iThemba (continued tutoring with hands on activities and use of exploratorium material), UWC (exploratorium, including E865 Cerenkov counter mirrors and collectors), and the subject advisors (identifying schools and situations for further collaboration). Some currently suggested further collaboration plans are: a) Hermanus to make force boards; available PhysMoVan cylindrival coordinate system maps to be used together with the Hermanus boards and local school springs for force table activity. b) UWC/Paarl joint research on radon released from large granite "pearl" for which Paarl is named; c) community (expanded) exploratorium in parking lot in Paarl. Dr. Jones and Shionna return to hotel in Cape Town. May 16 (Friday): Up at 4:00 am to see the beginning of the eclipse of the moon (bundled up in blankets, sitting on the bench outside our flat; saw about 1/4 of the eclipse by 4:30, back for some more shuteye). Nichelle and Matt leave at 7:00 am for travel (with Ben, Moira's husband) to Wesbank High School situated in Malmesbury. The contact person is Mr. Christo Gouws and the principal is Mr. Kortje. The telephone number of the school is 022 4864868. 8:40 am (approx). arrive at school, setup exploratorium, watched skits in chemistry class. 9:30-10:45 hands on with Gr. 11,12 (~ 25 total)(Matt, electricity,12th; Nichelle, collisions, 11th graders) 10:45-11:00 lightning quick exploratorium re-setup. 11:00-12:30 exploratorium with Gr. 10,11,12 ( ~ 60 students total) 12:30 - 1:00pm. continued informal visiting with 12th graders 1:00 pm. lunch with principal. 1:30 pm. Moira picks up Nichelle and Matt, return to Capetown via UWC (see below). Note from Trevor: Please note the following: It would be appreciated if you could make copies of the activities which the learners will be involved with during your visit so that the teachers could use these activities as part of their formal/prescribed assessment of the learners. (This point was addressed by giving each teacher a copy of the PhysMoVan notebook). You will have to determine what you want from the learners and the teachers for the evaluation of the Physmovan project.(Note: evaluation forms were provided by Jonathan Clark and Peter Oxenham). Trevor Daniels cell number 0823709472 Meanwhile, Delia Marshall picks up jat ~ 10:00 am. jat moves remainder of Cerenkov counter equipment to UWC, sets up mock C1,C2 setup for noon seminar (Adventures in kaon physics and physics education) meet Dirk Knoessen, other interested faculty. Daniel Adams, interested in physics education, will begin year's sabbatical July 7 in Phoenix, Arizona. May 17 (Saturday): Jerremy Fortyn (072 358 8092, cell 083-234-7279) picks us up at iThemba at 8:00 AM. 9am-1pm: COSAT. more work with learners, and also UCT SEED tutors. (tutors learn experiments while we work with students, then complete training after students finish. 9:00-11:00 hands on activities 11:00-12:00 exploratorium with UCT tutors. 9:30 Dr. Jones and Shionna arrive, discussion with COSAT faculty. ~12:45 UCT tutors, Dr. Jones and Shionna leave. ~1pm jat, Matt, Nichelle get ride to iThemba with Peter Oxenham (to return equipment). jat's plans to work are scuttled by power outage, jat, Matt and Nichelle are kindly dropped at Kirstenbosch by Peter. There they (by chance) meet Dr. Jones, Shionna and Trevor Daniels, in discussion of teacher training issues. jat, Matt, Nichelle all climb part way up Skeleton Gorge trail, and then they (together with Dr. Jones and Shionna) were transported to their respective lodgings by Jerremy Fortyn. ~6pm. team back at iThemba. computer work, notebooks in evening. early to bed to recover from the weeks's activities (Nichelle earliest, at 6:15pm, being unaccustomed to mountain hiking). Note: preliminary look at learner handson evaluations encouraging. Report from Celeste Issel a big morale booster for the team... her obvious appreciation of our work helps justify in our minds our nearly unremitting efforts here.. not only in Worcester but also in the West Coast/Winelands this past week, and much of the same in prospect for the coming week. May 18 (Sunday):team invited to S. African braai at the father-in-law of Antoinetta Breytenbach. pickup 11:30 am water lilly stew, grilled lamb chops, snoek, baked squash, milk tart, ice cream, many salads. (we traded some american dishes for some s. african ones). after lunch Marty Breytenback and Hekke (son) took us on trip to Gordon's Bay, spectacular view and wind; back by way of Strand, enjoyed the kites. May 19 (Monday): visit KwamFundu (Home of Education), another Dinaledi school (like COSAT) (transport by Jerremy Fortyn) arr. 8:00 am, join in school celebration of music championship for the school. Meet Mr. Maharaj (subject advisor), teachers: Weedaad Nasiep, Nadia Mgxoji (just back from birth of baby daughter Phoebe), and Luzcako Makapgla. Ms. Nasiep is the dept. head, and has been teaching physics here about 5 years (previously taught biology and did impressive job of improving biology pass rate). Ms. Mgxoji helped the students with force table, jat did light scattering, Matt electricity, and Nichelle collsions. 9:00-10:00 10:00-11:20 forces, electricity and colisions rotated once, light scattering continued. 11:30-12:15 lunch with teachers 12:15-12:45 exploratorium setup 12:45-2:20 exploratorium labs and exploratorium 2:30 pickup by Jerremy Fortyn. visit Khayelitsha craft market, tried (unsuccessfully) hardware store for rotating mechanism for stool bought old bicycle wheel to replace the one we lost (found that laser pointers can be bought in the camera/optics shop for about 25 R) Ma 20: visit Luhlaza (Frazer Siteti's school... though "he never returned") (contact teacher Mrs. Dyonashe (Collega?)) Luvuyo Ngubelanga (Principal) brought us lunch, but was interrupted in our discussions by noise outside which proved to be an imposter dressed as a student, robbing the school tuck shop, and threatening the operator with a gun (kept us back in the lunchroom for an extra 15 min., but otherwise no real ill-harm. worked with 35 12th graders, for both hands on activities and exploratorium. 9:00-11:30 hands on activities. Ms. Dyonashe follows all experiments. Peter Oxenham arrives and helps with force table experiment, since we are a team of only 3. (jat light scattering, matt elec., Nichelle collisions, as usual; elec, forces, collis. all rotate at approx 10:15). lunch (see above). 12:45- 2:15 pm (lost last approx. 10 min. c. assembly to discuss the noon shooting). Jerremy Fortyn returns us to iThemba. 3:00 pm evaluation meeting with Delia Marshall, Peter Oxenham, and team, at iThemba. separate short discussion with Ginny Stone, who was unable to attend. suggest area near Grahamstown for possible follow-on work (linked to brief return to capetown area to revisit some efforts here). divide remaining extra exploratorium and other equipment between COSAT and UWC (Delia Marshall) Matt is planning to stay on until ~ June 5, will stay at iThemba, and/or in township accomodations arranged by Peter Oxenham, and work both with iThemba and with COSAT. Ma 21: Jerremy Fortyn picks us up at approx. 7:30. Masibambane (Mr. Majola) 12th grade learners walk 1 km to neighboring Hector Petersen school, (since Masibambane is very crowded, with ~60 students in a tiny room(dimensions..?) we worked with about 35 students from each scool. ~ 8:30 am: arr, discuss plan with teachers, etc. ~9:15-11:45 hands on expts. (Mr. Majola does force tables, jat light scattering, matt electricity, nichelle ocllisions) ~ 12:00-12:45 lunch with teachers. ~12:45-1:15/1:30 setup exploratorium ~1:30-2:15 exploratorium with students ~2:15-2:45 pack exploratorium, talk with teachers ~2:45 pickup by jeremy fortyn, back to iThemba, pack up, etc. May 22: ~8:30 jat, matt meet with Melvyn Caroline, Ameesh Maharaj, Peter Oxenham, various possible extensions discussed, use of exploratorium at UWC/iThemba, possibly using students who have already experienced it as "exploratorium helpers". perhaps mr. caroline will visit an exploratorium also. mr. maharaj expects to go over hands on experiments with teachers, make equipment available to them on a loan basis. ~noon jat, nichelle give seminar at iThemba. 17:20: jat, Nichelle catch plane home, via Johannesburg. Matt stays to collaborate more with COSAT. he will pay his own ticket change, and COSAT will arrange lodging for him. (another possibility is that Ginny has arranged for him to stay on at iThemba if he wishes. perspectives: jat: 1) exciting to see the project being picked up and expanded by: Sam Ramaila and Sadha Pillay in Hermanus (exploratorium and hands on activities, maybe also making force boards "en masse", for interested high schools; carried on with Emil Weder High School and the Montessori School after we left), Celeste Issel in the Overberg region (hands on activities, maybe gradually some exploratorium activities at the EMDC), Trevor Daniels in the West Coast/Winelands region (hands on activities, maybe exploratorium joint with Delia Marshall, possibly including some community participation), Delia Marshall at UWC (full exploratorium setup at UWC, also hands on activities; likely use of E865 equipment also for undergrads), COSAT (Peter Oxenham and Jonathan Clark, interested in tying hands on activities and exploratorium activities more closely to the curriculum, developing hands-on activities assessments which will be useful to the teachers which in many cases are severely lacking such hands on assessment activities. such lack severely handicaps those learners, both in what they know and in their formal assessments) iThemba (hands on activities and exploratorium) Metropole East: Mr. Maharaj and Melvyn Caroline (hands on activities spread among teachers, possible exploratoriums in conjunction with iThemba and UWC) 2) The formal evaluation will come later, but informally, and our quick scans of the forms as they were completed ready to hand over to the evaluation team, indicate generally positive reactions, along with the wish to develop assessments linked to the PhysMoVan activities. seems likely that some usch assessments will be developed by COSAT. all parties emphasized the advantage of the excitement of international visitors, but agreed that much of the good of the work could now be carried on by local teams, while emphasizing that occasional re-visits would do much to keep alive the "legend" and excitement. 3) If the NSF is interested in continuing the support of this project, a possible direction next year would be to expand to another area, while perhaps making a short return visit to the Capetown area. The area suggested was Grahamstown, and particularly the area around the town of Alice. Grahamstown is the site of the famous Grahamstown festival, but the festival seems short on our more detailed learning activities, and it seems desirable for our concentrated work to be separate from the festival. In Grahamstown the J.L. Smith Marine Fish Research Institute may play somewhat the same essential support roles as the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory and iThemba labs have played close to Capetown. 4) The team of 2 undergraduates and one faculty member, supplemented part of the time by local participation, was adequate for this period which was in large part a re-visiting and re-use and consolidation of the kits which had been prepared in august, 2002. The team was thin, however, with no slack for plan variations, etc. In some schools we worked with larger groups than desirable and were not able to offer all the hands on activities because of these limitations, and matt worked some days while fighting a flu-like infection. with such a small crew we would have wasted valuable time in equipment preparation, had we had to do the same kit-preparation as last summer. (this year we only checked through the remaining kits, consolidated, refurbished, etc). 5)the two undergraduates did a good job coming quickly up to speed, concentrating primarily on one hands on activity and becoming expert in that, and gradually learning the different exploratorium stations as well. in the end we found most of our travel was by arrangement with local drivers of vans (tour guides, etc), so that there was not a space problem. it the project were to be expanded to a new area, a team of 4 total with at least one senior person (grad. student, hs teacher, other faculty memeber) besides the team leader, would be strongly recommended. 6) OVERALL, AN EXCITING TRIP, SEEING THE PHYSMOVAN BEGIN TO TAKE ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN. KUDOS TO THE UNDERGRADUATE TEAM (MATT FAGERBURG AND NICHELLE MADISON) AND ALL OUR CAPE TOWN COLLABORATORS (MENTIONED ABOVE) WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE.
