Tentative plans for return visit to Capetown, S. Africa Plans drawn March 8,2004 (notes by Julia Thompson) Visit hoped for May 2004 (Leader Arlene Maclin) arlene maclin has been visiting me here in st. louis for the last two days, learning about the exploratorium and hands on activities. today we visited brentwood hs and presented an exploratorium there, as a warmup. prof. maclin has purchased her ticket for the may trip. we are currently urgently looking for funding for the rest of her team, especially vernon simmons and nichelle madison who travelled with me in 2002 and 2003 and can thus help in the transition to prof. maclin's continuation of the PhysMoVan project. we need some help from our s. african colleagues to make the trip come off, and come off successfully: 1) verification of inventory of equipment. according to my notes, a complete exploratorium complement was left both at hermanus and at uwc. also hands on activities kits at hermanus, uwc, worcester (celeste issel), trevor daniels, ramesh maharaj, and cosat. please check your equipment and let us know what you have and if it is working. if the meters or lasers need batteries, can you arrange to get them and have the equipment working when we arrive? 2) base from which to work with some minimal xeroxing, printing, and internet capabilities. hermanus magnetic observatory will take care of this for the middle week of our trip (also will arrange transportation to and from hermanus from cape town and any necessary transportation to neighboring schools during that week). but we still need help for the time in the cape town area. one suggestion for this has been saao, but no definite plans have yet been made. 3) help in identifying inexpensive lodging in the cape town area. note that if possible the lodging should be convenient to our "base" above. (2). 4) evaluation: last year received a useful evaluation from celeste issel. awaiting imminent arrival of larger scale evaluation from peter oxenham and jonathan clark (cosat). i have made an informal summary of the evaluation feedback on the forms developed by cosat last spring (attached). need to plan evaluation for this trip. cosat again, perhaps supplemented by review by me (jat) of the student and teacher feedback forms and comments, which i would be in a position to compare with last year? other ideas? 5) ideas about how best to carry on the PhysMoVan activities in the team's absence? Tentative itinerary: arrive May 13 or 14. Prof. Maclin will arrive May 14. If possible, would be desirable for vernon and nichelle to travel together and arrive May 13 to have a day to check out inventories, packing of equipment, working of equipment, etc. May 14, (friday) meet (if possible) with those interested in the capetown area, likely including: peter oxenham (cosat), ramesh maharaj, and possibly melvyn caroline (metropole east emdc), trevor daniels (west coast/winelands emdc), and prof. mohkele (south african national research foundation), to review goals and also to discuss hopes and plans for joint us-s. african funding to continue and expand the PhysMoVan project. May 15 (sat). exploratorium, possible hands on activities at cosat? afternoon: free (Greenpoint flea market, Kirstenbosch, Robben Island,....) May 16 (sunday). morning free (Anglican or other church service?) afternoon travel to Hermanus, settle, prepare for week's work. May 17-21 (m-f). work with schools identified by celeste issel and elisa fraser. some may come to the HMO, the team may travel to some schools. May 22. (sat). return to cape town, free, reflect May 23. (sun) free, reflect May 24-27. (m-thursday) Metropole East and possibly West Coast/Winelands. hope to return to some of trevor daniels' schools, since we view this trip in a way as an evaluation of previous work, and estimate of to what extent it makes sense to continue. has previously left equipment been used, also maintained in good order? are teachers becoming comfortable with assisting in use of the equipment and also using it on their own? present suggestions from metropole east are that the team revisits kwamfundo and hector peterson (possibly with massibambane again coming over?) from the list of schools visited last year. that would leave two days for west coast/winelands. if we are unable to schedule west coast/winelands visits, then we can expand the metropole east visits. May 28 (friday) wrap up meetings (how did we do, etc) noon seminar on technical subjects by team members at wcu? (these might also be given earlier in the week, depending on the rest of the schedule). May 29. (sat). team returns home. lodging needed in cape town area: may 13 or 14 thru 15 may 22 through may 28. All my best wishes for the team! Julia Thompson
