UMIST Hiking Club Tour, 2-4 May 1997, Austwick, Yorkshire Dales.

1) For this tour we have one biggy on the program: the three peaks walk,
38.4 km, 1300m ascend. From Horton-in-Ribblesdale straight up Pen-Y-Ghent,
the steep way. From Pen-Y-Ghent over the boggy moorlands to the railway
bridge in Ribblesdale, and up the side of Whernside. Off the Whernside,
with some steep bits back to the valley village of Chapel-Le-Dale, with
the Old Hill inn and again up for the last of the peaks: Ingleborough.
A long and gradual descend brings us back to Horton.
38.4km, 1300m ascend.

2) Also starting from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, walking the Pennine Way
northbound along the valley, halfway up the ridge. Where the Dales Way
joins the Pennine Way branch off westwards across the wide valley into the
feet of the hills. Back through the bottom of the valley, and the last bit
parallel to the first bit, but now below the rocky bit.
21.5km 180m ascend.

3) From Austwick up and down the Ingleborough (730m). Up through the fields
and the side of the Ingleborough. Down via the ridge of Little Ingeborough
and through the gorge, with a cave, forests, and a waterfall. From Clapham
to Austwick through some meadows. On a clear day one should have a great
view from Ingleborough all around.
19km, 700m ascend.

3) Starting from Austwick through low hilly and rocky bits to the waterfall
at Stainforth, a mile along the river Ribble and back through fields and
roughly the same area.
16.5km, 200m ascend.

4) Exploring around Malham, the waterfall Janet's Foss and gorges, rocky
bits, some views southwards from Midge hill, and back via the lake,
Malham Tarn, and the Pennine Way, which leads through Malham Cove.
12km, 250m ascend.

5) No-path route, starting in Hawes via the Pennine Way up the Shunner Fell,
bending westwards (there is no path, but great views) over a broad ridge,
and follow it back to Hawes, a couple of broad tops along the way.
25km, 550m ascend.

6) From Malham back to the campsite in Austwick over the hills, nice views.
Via a gorge and some caves (fun!) and the town Settle (pub). Along the
river and over a hilly bit (same as 3).
19km, 350m.

7) Around Hawes, up a number of river valleys and back through the fields.
Field, forests, farmland, and rivers. A stroll for those who want to take
it easy.
12km, 200m ascend.

8) From Hawes over the flat hills in the south, up the Whether Fell, over
the Roman Road to the Pennine Way, and back to Hawes. Views into the
