Mathematica
is one of several popular Symbolic
Computing, or Computer Algebra packages; other popular
such packages include Maple and Matlab. Symbolic computing
packages like Mathematica provide an environment designed for high
performance calculation and visualization which is part WYSIWYG
text editor, part 3-d color graphing calculator, part mathematical symbol
manipulator, part programming environment. Mathematica is the product of
Wolfram Research, headed by
Mathematica creator Stephen
Wolfram, former Cal Tech physicist and the youngest person to recieve
a "genius grant" from the MacArthur Foundation.
