At the Pitt Physics REU, we have a tradition of having our undergrads
participate in math and science tutoring of local area summer school
students (typically at the middle-school or high-school level), as a form
of scholastic community outreach, and as an extra way that our REU
participants "earn" their stipend. The REU participants transport
themselves to the school in groups. There is always monitoring by school
teachers.
There tends to be a fluidity in summer-school programs, so the exact
location and time schedule of the tutoring often varies from summer
to summer. Each summer, we try to find as good a match as possible with
respect to location, time committment, and material being covered. The
tutoring committment typically is scheduled for approximately half of the
10 weeks of the REU program. Tutoring typically takes less than 3
hours per week on average, during the duration of the tutoring.
Participating in tutoring affords REU undergrads personal and intellectual
growth, and forges a connection within the scholastic community. In the
same way that Pitt Physics staff mentors the REU participants, so do the
REU participants get the chance to mentor the students they tutor. REU
participants typically find the tutoring an enjoyable and rewarding
experience.
