Recommend Actions: * Observers should do afternoon calibrations, even on Thanksgiving, to check for these issues early. * Intruments should be checked by mountain staff when being used for the first time in > week 17:50 Noticed that the darks I took had a value of '0'. Every pixel was zero. Realized the same was true of the previous zeroJunk images that Karen had set to test out the detector. 18:00 Detector temperature increased suddenly by perhaps 1 K in a minute. It was at 79.9K when right before unbiasing and unpowering. (Standard nominal value is 78.5K) Unbiased the detector; unpowered the detector Karen reset something? and the temperature is coming back down. 18:17 Temperature appear to have been stable at around 78.5K for a few minutes 18:25 The temperature is climbing a bit again. Reached 78.8. Unbiased and unpowered. Shutdown WHIRC: -- (Kept) filter in OPAQUE -- Unbias detector was already done -- Unpower detector was already done -- Closed the WHIRC Detector Biasing window -- Stop PAN We left the WHIRC Engineering GUI up as Karen consulted additional resources. 18:30 Started up observed side of WHIRC again -- Start PAN ---- Waited for one minute. Saw no errors -- Start MOP ---- MOP came up. Temperature at 78.453 K ---- Leaving as is (unpowered, unbiased) 18:35 Shutdown WHIRC MOP and PAN again. 18:42 After advice from Charles, Karen Shutdown the engineering the GUI then went up to the telescope and: Powered down the WHIRC electronics Brought them back up Waited for system and temperature to stabalize as she reacquired P525-E. 18:45 Brought PAN back up Still got only 0s. with a set of junk zeros. Karen did something with Ctrl-C in a MOP window Then logged in to whirc-pan Ran "fc0" to clear the fiber link. 18:10 Error: Expected Integer but got '049', which looks octal Had to hard-kill the MOP to recover from this seemingly silly TCL error. Came back up. Still getting 0s for images wether zeros, darks, or on-sky. 18:49 SUCCESS! We're back up. And have signal in the image frames. Note: Internet-power switch instructions say "ssh", but it's "telnet". "user" vs "root" using staff password instructions unclear. 10 minutes of telescope lost to a discussion of these issues between OA and software staff. But, to be fair, if another hard reset is needed, it will be good to have this capability.
