Fan Cart Movie Analysis

Situation 1: Initial Push by Hand

1. Open the video "Fan Push.mov". Play the video and watch the motion carefully. Replay as necessary.

2. After group discussion, have your recorder sketch predictions of what the following plots look like: (Make sure your group has come to a consensus.)

3. Open the Excel file "Fan Cart Videos - Data" and open the "Situation 1" worksheet (click on the tab in the lower left bottom of the window). Make the following two plots in Excel (it is an XY scatter plot) and compare to your predictions:

Situation 2: Forward Push by Fan

1. Save the video "Fan on Forward.mov". (On Macs: option-click to save it to the /Users/Shared directory). Play the video and watch the motion carefully. Replay as necessary.

2. After group discussion, have your recorder sketch predictions of what the following plots look like: (Make sure your group has come to a consensus.)

3. Open the software LoggerPro (red diamond with caliper) and use the Insert meno to insert the movie. Open the pdf file "Video Analysis.pdf" to learn about the Video Analysis Buttons. (Don't press any yet.)

4. You can enlarge the video simply by dragging the lower right-hand corner of the video screen; this will make it easier for you to collect data later on. Calibrate the distances in the video: First click the "Set Scale" button, then simply press the mouse down on the left end of the meter stick and drag the green line to the right end of the stick.

5. Set the origin of the video to some spot on the fan car using the "Set Origin" button.

6. Make sure the video is at the beginning, and collect position data by clicking the "Add Point" button.
Choose a convenient and visible place on the fan cart as the point that you want to keep track of its position, and click away. Caution: Be careful to click on the same place on the fan cart each time. The video will advance one frame after each click. (There are segments at the beginning of the video where the fan cart does not move. If so, continue to click on the same place that you have choosen and let the video analysis program advance the frames for you.)

7. Compare the x vs. t graph in LoggerPro with your x vs. t prediction. From the file menu, choose Print, then print to a pdf file that you can use for later (under button at bottom left).

8. Click on "x(m)" along the vertical axis and change it to "x velocity". Compare the Vx vs. t graph in LoggerPro with your Px vs. t prediction. To capture the graph, press the Shift, Apple, and "4" keys simultaneously. You'll get a crosshair cursor. Click and drag a rectangle around the area of the screen you want to capture. The computer will automatically save a pdf file of the graphics onto the desktop. You can then save the file for later use.

 

Situation 3: Backward Push by Fan

1. Open the video "Fan on Backward.mov". Play he video and watch the motion carefully. Replay as necessary.

2. After group discussion, have your recorder sketch predictions of what the following plots look like:

3. Discuss with your team members and come to a consensus on your predictions.

4. Open your Excel file "Fan Cart Videos - Data" and open the "Situation 3" worksheet (click on the tab in the lower left bottom of the window). Make the following two plots in Excel and compare to your predictions:
